The challenge: a clear budget for your video campaign
Let's look at a real-world example of a Flemish company that wanted to launch an online video. The marketing manager had a tight budget. They needed a voice that sounded reliable and warm. They initially thought they could pay the voice actor by the hour, just like a photographer or a copywriter.
Only when they received the quote did they notice that the price was split into different parts. This caused confusion: why do you pay separately for the recording and separately for using the voice?
Our approach: breaking down the rate like a rental car
To understand how this works, think about renting a car. When you rent a car, you pay a fixed base price for the vehicle itself. However, the final cost depends on how far you drive it. It also depends on whether you cross borders into another country.
It works the same way with a professional voice actor. The total rate consists of two clear parts:
- The recording fee (or session fee): This is the payment for the voice actor's time in the studio. It also covers the delivery of the raw or cleaned audio files.
- The buyout (usage rights): This is the fee for distribution. A video shown only internally at a staff event has a different impact than a commercial running via paid social media ads.
- Non-commercial work: For projects with no commercial purpose, such as internal e-learning or an instructional film, we usually calculate the rate simply per word or per project.
The outcome: making targeted choices within your budget
Because this company knew exactly how things worked beforehand, they could make targeted choices. They decided to place the video organically on their own website and LinkedIn page first. This kept the buyout limited. If the video later runs as a paid advertisement on social media, you can easily extend the buyout afterwards. This gives you full control over your budget.
Our database has 93 professional voices, selected by us. They speak various languages, from Flemish and French to Spanish and German. For this project, the company chose a warm, natural tone to emphasise its local roots.
