Discover why the right rhythm for long German words is crucial to the appeal of your Belgian export product.
A Flemish manufacturer of industrial packaging machines wanted to roll out their latest instruction video to the German-speaking market. When searching for a suitable German voice-over, the developers initially focused on a clear vocal tone. Only when the first test recording came in, did they notice something wasn't quite right. The text was linguistically correct, and the pronunciation was accurate, but the message came across as rushed and unnatural to the test group in Germany.
Technical texts are full of long, compound nouns. In this specific project, it involved terms such as Verpackungssicherheitsverordnung. The original voice artist uttered the entire term in one breath and placed the emphasis too evenly. As a result, the explanation sounded less like an expert instruction and more like a recited lesson.
For an export company aiming to build trust and craftsmanship, such a small difference in rhythm can be damaging. German-speaking customers disengage if the speaker sounds as if they are reading the term for the first time.
The difference between an acceptable recording and a flawless corporate video lies in a minuscule fraction of a second. A native speaker inserts a very brief pause just before a complex, compound word. This micro-pause lasts less than a tenth of a second and is almost imperceptible.
Something essential happens in that short silence. The listener gets time to process the sentence, and the speaker builds enough breath support to place the emphasis on the correct syllable. Think of that pause as a flywheel that needs to reach the right speed for a moment before its cogs engage. Without that pause, the sentence loses its dynamic.
To give the video precisely the right impact, a professional studio team chooses a native voice actor who naturally masters the German rhythm. Nadja, one of our voices from Berlin, for example, knows exactly how to bring a text to life in that way. Even for telephony or shorter messages, a native speaker like Sebastian grasps that sense of timing immediately.
During the direction of the recording, the focus was not on the general tone, but on the exact breathing before the technical terms.
As a voice director, I always provide this guideline in the studio for German product films: allow a long word room to breathe at the beginning, and build tension towards the core of the term. As soon as a voice actor has to gasp for air midway through a word, the entire narrative loses its authority. By structuring the sentences to create natural pauses, the instruction video immediately gained the desired weight.
After the re-recording, the audio perfectly matched the visuals. The emphases felt natural, the speaking speed was significantly calmer without the video being longer, and German-speaking viewers found the manual clear and reliable.
By focusing on that single detail (the rhythmic pause before a compound word), the entire impression of the video project changed.

No matter how well someone masters a second language, subtle breathing pauses and exact stress in compound words often reveal that the speaker is not a native speaker. For a business audience, this nuance is crucial for building trust.
For general corporate videos and instructions, we usually choose neutral German (Hochdeutsch). This is widely understood and accepted throughout the German-speaking world.
Write out difficult abbreviations in full. For specific brand names or technical terms, indicate where the emphasis should be. This saves time during the recording session.

Educational audio content: course modules, instructional videos, training. Often long texts. That is why we charge per word or per finished hour of audio instead of a standard BSF.
E-learning usually falls under corporate (non-broadcast). For public learning environments, a buy-out may be required.
A breathing exercise helps you regulate your heart rate and stress levels using a fixed rhythm or counting pattern. Breathing is the quickest way to calm your nervous system without needing any extra equipment.
Voice-overs for telephone menus, messages on hold, and voicemails. We charge per prompt (one short message) or per word, depending on the scope.
For larger telephony projects (multi-level IVR, multilingual, holiday and public holiday messages), we provide a package price.
A Buy-out is the fee you pay for the right to use a voice recording for a specific period and a specific medium (e.g. Radio, TV or Online).
For our telephony messages, we use a unique model:
For commercials (Radio/TV), the buy-out depends on the reach and duration. Our price calculator calculates this for you immediately, so you are never faced with surprises.

How much does a professional voice-over cost?
The price depends on three factors: the medium (corporate video, radio advert, telephony), the licence duration (1 year, unlimited) and the script length. With Voices, you see the exact price per voice artist before you order. No surprises later on.
A short corporate video starts from a modest amount. A radio advert with national reach costs more due to the buyout (broadcasting rights). Telephone messages are generally the most affordable.

What exactly does a buy-out entail in voice-over?
A buy-out is the right to use your recording on a medium (radio, TV, online, telephony) for an agreed period. You'll see it reflected in your price before payment on /tarieven/.
