The right accent: should you opt for pure Flemish or a mix of dialects?
In Flanders, we listen to voices differently than in other Dutch-speaking regions. A Dutch voice from the north often sounds too assertive or businesslike to us, whilst a dialect that’s too local can make the message unintelligible to a wider audience. That’s why it’s important to decide in advance exactly which accent you need for your production.
- Standard Dutch with a Belgian accent: This is the safest and most professional choice for corporate videos and instructional films. It sounds polished, neutral and is easily understood by everyone in Flanders.
- Polished colloquial Dutch: This variant is close to everyday speech and immediately sounds much warmer and more approachable. It works excellently for radio adverts or social media videos where you want to connect with your audience.
- Regional accent: Sometimes you want to come across as very local to generate extra goodwill. A subtle Antwerp, West Flemish or Limburg touch can add a great deal of character and authenticity, provided the brand and message lend themselves to it.
The impact of timbre and pitch
Every voice has a unique colour, also known as timbre. Low voices naturally convey calm, reliability and authority. They are therefore frequently used for documentaries, serious corporate presentations or in the financial sector. A higher-pitched voice, on the other hand, often sounds enthusiastic, energetic and youthful. This works very well for trendy adverts, events or lively animated videos.
